The Department was founded in 1988. Active participation in the foundation of the new department took the famous Bulgarian scientist and expert in design and technology of radio-electronic equipment Prof. Georgi Grigorov Savov.

The academic staff from the department is actively involved in developing research projects, financed by national research contracts, service contracts, research contracts of scientific programs of NATO and SOCRATES.

Since 2006 the R&D laboratory "Electronics and Automation of the Railway Transport" is part of the department, with head Assoc. Prof. Ph.D. Anelia Doseva. Many of the specialized contracts of the laboratory are part of international projects in the "Security Engineering" sector and are associated with the major projects of the Bulgarian Railways - "Building a system to control traffic of trains (ETCS) in the area of Plovdiv – Burgas", "Reconstruction and modernization of the site Plovdiv – Svilengrad", "Construction of Danube Bridge 2 Vidin – Calafat".
